Major
touchstones in my life have been a marriage of 26 years, two
sons who are now young adults, strong female friendships,
close ties with my sisters and parents, and finally, work
that I feel I am meant to do.
When I
graduated from Mt. Holyoke I thought I wanted to teach, and
went directly to Wheelock
College for a Master’s in early childhood education. I didn’t go into teaching
at that point, but worked as a unit coordinator at
Mass General
Hospital and then in retail management at a local department store.
Along the way I picked up another Master’s degree, an MBA from the
University of
Massachusetts. I stayed home
with my kids for several years, but was always an active
community volunteer.
I found
that I loved working in the schools, and had patience and
compassion for students with learning disabilities who
struggle with academics. I have worked for the past five
years as a paraprofessional in special education, and will
soon be certified as a special education teacher. I find it
fulfilling work. I really feel that I have come full circle
from the spring of 1974.
