After graduation, I
worked at the New York Federal Reserve Bank in the economic
research department. I moved into Manhattan, living in
Chelsea long before it was trendy.
Got an MBA from NYU, but more importantly, met my future
husband, Joe, in a management psychology class.
We got married in 1978. By then, we were living in Brooklyn
Heights. I stayed home with my children- Matt (1979), Kate
(1982), Beth (1984) and Joanna (1988).
After Kate was born, we moved from Park Slope to Cranford,
N.J. – mostly to get more space, but also to get out of
Brooklyn which was getting a scary during the crack cocaine
epidemic.
In 1989, I’d had enough of staying home and decided to go to
nursing school – I thought I could work part-time (didn’t
happen). So, I went to the local County College at night to
take the sciences I had avoided at MHC and some other random
subjects. I finished in 1994, only to discover that no one
was hiring part-time nurses. So, it was back to staying home
– plus Joanna’s kindergarten teacher implied that someone
(i.e. not her siblings) should be keeping an eye on her.
About two years later, I began substituting in the public
schools as a school nurse, which is what I’ve been doing for
11 years now. I go on lots of trips and think I’ve been to
nearly every museum and tourist attraction in NJ and NYC;
longer trips have been to Washington, Norfolk, Philadelphia,
Gettysburg, and Boston…plus, I get paid to do it.
We’ve been in Cranford for 27 years – our current house is
on the Rahway River, which has flooded twice since we’ve
been here. Water in the basement is truly a gross
experience, but flood insurance helps.
Joe has recently “retired” from Morgan Stanley – He
frequently serves as a tour guide at the World Trade Center
Tribute Center, telling his story from both 1993 and 9/11.
We are in the process of fixing up a house in the Catskills.
The dream would be to sell our house and buy an apartment
(NYC??) and then have a country house, too.
Since MHC, I’ve learned not to be so shy, to drive a car,
quilt, ice skate, cross-country ski, and play the piano
(very badly – I’m just learning). Our kids are scattered
from Boston (Beth) to Washington (Kate), with Matt and his
wife, Katie, in NYC. Note – I have a daughter and a
daughter-in-law with the same name! Joanna is MHC 2010, so
I’ll be back next year for commencement. |
